  3. Although in most children growth and developmental events follow the same orderly pattern, the pace of maturation varies widely. Thus the growth performance of individual children is better viewed in relationship to their stage of physical maturity than in relationship to chronological age. Using skeletal age, it is possible to predict, with some degree of reliability, the final adult stature, and to distinguish between children who will mature early and those in whom sexual development will be delayed.
